Poems

by Faye Kilday

When I was a child I used to end my bedtime prayers with, "And please God, give me blue eyes. Thank you! Amen." This poem was inspired by my childhood prayers.

Blue Eyes Please!

I used to wish my eyes were blue,

I used to pray at night

For God to take away the brown

and make my eyes more light.

I wanted eyes the colour of a

brilliant summer sky,

Why won't you make my eyes

blue God...

OH WHY? OH WHY? OH WHY?

And this was God's reply:

Dear child, why do you ask me to

give you eyes of blue

When the eyes that I have blessed you

with are the perfect eyes for you?

They can see and they can blink,

They can close and they can cry,

They are perfect eyes in every way -

SO PLEASE STOP ASKING "WHY?"!!!
